WHY: To celebrate the arts & cultural livelihood of the Sierra Foothills

Historic downtown Sonora presents its premiere 2nd Saturday ART NIGHT for 2013 this Saturday, beginning at 5pm. "We're excited to welcome the New Year," states B.Z. Smith, the event's volunteer co-coordinator. "Our monthly celebration is getting stronger as more people recognize the rich arts and cultural opportunities." This Saturday 2nd Saturday ART NIGHT offers its fans a wide selection of musical and artistic styles.

"Once again, Sonora will be filled with live music acts," explains John Williams, ART NIGHT's other co-coordinator. "We have ten musical acts, representing 28 local musicians with two really hot dance bands: DyeMusica and The Lava Cats, the Sonora High drum corps, and some nice solo acts." Williams notes that in the Sierra Nevada region Sonora really stands out as the place to catch live music on a regular basis. "What other Mother Lode community can boast this much live music for Saturday night?" In addition, Smith added that this month features some dynamic visual art and at least one new location to soak in local art. "A Sonora icon has re-emerged with incredible local art talent on view: The Europa is back in town!"

Starting at Sonora's Courthouse Park strollers can enjoy a full evening's entertainment. Downtown Shoes, located at 4 S. Washington St., welcomes one of Sonora's hottest dance bands, The Lava Cats. "This great combo band is big ART NIGHT supporter," Williams explains. "LeeAnn Fox, one of the band's anchors, is a 2nd Sat sponsor, and The Lava Cats has donated their time on many occasions for our monthly event. While listening and dancing, strollers can enjoy nature photography by Brenda Gorski and abstract digital photography by Geoff Wynne. Just across the street at 11 S.Washington St., It's Yo Good Yogurt features artworks by local high school students and offers another one of Grossman's murals. "Plus, we're always tickled when a couple of our young musicians hop in to share their talents," states owner Barbara Smith. Nearby Talulah's Restaurant, 13 S. Washington St., features paintings by internationally known abstract artist Robert Carabas.

Walking south to 52 S. Washington St., Joan's Boutique welcomes Judith Hastings with her popular "Hastings Hatters" hand-felted hats, each one individually styled by the artist. Hastings donates a portion of her sales to women's health programs. In addition, Sonora's popular boutique plans a January Trunk Show. Next door The Ventana Art Gallery & Annex, 48 S. Washington St., offers an array of fine art, created by many of the region's best known artists, as well as artists from the Sacramento region and Los Angeles. Curated by art specialists Dennis and Denise Garcia, The Ventana is one of Sonora's most reputable galleries, and now offers workshops in its new art workshop space.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the historic Bradford Building at 19 W. Bradford Ave. Studio B presents the works of six resident artists, who share one of Sonora's most charming architectural spaces: Allison Blansit, Irene Deaver, Sherie Drake, Adam Duffy, Mike Kiriluk and Twyla Olsen. Then visitors can enjoy The Candy Vault, on the corner of Washington Street and Bradford Avenue, where they can see murals by nationally known muralist Judy Grossman. This month revelers can also hear music by Sonora High School's drum corps, "Pataflafla."

Across the street Banyan Tree, located at 59 S. Washington St., offers jewelry, handcrafted by Sylvia Kincaid and watercolors by owner Patricia Tippett. Nearby Backspace Boutique & Gallery, located at 67 S. Washington, offers a new musical act for ART NIGHT when the duo Grant Niday and Tom Riggs share their blend of improvisational jazz guitar. "Both Grant and Tom are long-time Tuolumne County friends, who have really grown up doing music together," says Backspace co-owner Lissa Anderson. "We're thrilled to be their premiere spot for 2nd Saturday." Backspace also features paintings and jewelry designs by several local artists, including Corey West, Heather Murdoch, Linda Henderson, Susan Sugarman, Dorene Eggleston, Magnolia Lane and Backspace's own Lauren Hurley. Then at the corner of Linoberg and Washington sits the new home of Mountain Home Gifts. This Saturday the art-inspired shops offers music by June Diggle, a well-loved flutist who is equally at home playing classical jazz and pop music. "June has been a real standard for ART NIGHT," says Williams. "We're pleased to welcome her to Mountain Home Gifts."

Nearby Sonora's newest art gallery, The Greater Good, presents the grand opening of The 4th Annual Big Lebowski Alley Art Show. "Take a bowling pin, and make art!" says the art show's founder and one of The Greater Good's anchor artists Zac Calbert. Every year the decorated bowling pins and bowling-inspired art pieces have charmed growing audiences. This will be the first year that The Greater Good will host the annual event. Located at 1 E. Linoberg St., The Greater Good, a collective art gallery, represents several local emerging artists. "In just a few months these young people are creating a dynamic shift in our local art scene with a real glimpse into the alternative art movement," Smith notes.

At 7pm Dye Musica sets the beat with its first Sonora show for the New Year, a free concert at The Black Room, located at 83 S. Stewart St. Working in cooperation with Artisan Pizza, The Black Room brings more live music to Sonora's growing arts and culture district with help from musician Aden Wrede, manager of The Black Room. "DyeMusica is really making its mark in our region," explains Smith. The Arnold-based band, directed by Kevin Dye, skillfully blends Reggae, Rock and Blues with original tunes, as well as a some famed cover-tunes. "This band is really growing an audience in Tuolumne County, and is moving up the ranks with our popular hometown bands. Dye Musica makes you want to dance!"

Meanwhile Benjamin Fig, 129 S. Washington St., presents its on-going installation of paintings by artist and author Gwen Popovac, as well as her exquisite collection of museum-quality beaded masks. Benjamin Fig has been Sonora's anchor for cultural arts since the 1970's with its collection of Asian art and art of Central and South America. Next door Legends Antiques, Books & Soda Fountain, located at 131 S. Washington St., welcomes ART NIGHT newcomer Elijah Garcia, who will share his Indie-Rock improvisations on guitar. "Elijah is one of the new younger musicians who are starting to appear during our monthly event," coordinator Smith notes. "These talented young musicians are wanting to make their mark on our local arts scene."

Just south at 161 S. Washington St., Stoneground Studios presents a selection of beautifully handcrafted jewelry, using the Intarsia technique to create inlaid mosaics of polished stones, set in high quality silver., created by owners Russ and Nancy Moreton During ART NIGHT Russ Moreton, who is also a local Bluegrass musician and host of a local Open Mic event, plays for visitors, as well.

Nearby the Aloft Art Gallery, 167 S. Washington Street, presents “New Year’s Mélange – Preview of things to come,” featuring new works by all the cooperative gallery members. During their ART NIGHT reception, musician Esau Munoz shares classical Spanish guitar. Across the street Sonora Joe's, 140 S. Washington St., presents the natural realist paintings of award-winning artist Michael Severin. Severin will also share his folk music style on 12-string guitar. Plus, the popular coffee shop welcomes back The Devil Mountain Boys to share their Bluegrass sound.

Right at the Stockton Rd. traffic light The House of Soup, 185 S. Washington St., welcomes another popular Sierra Foothill musical act when Peg Reza's Blue Shoes Ukulele Auxiliary Orchestra brings its musical joy to the stage at the new restaurant. "The House of Soup presents musical right to the heart of our downtown," Smith observes. "What a great welcome for visitors that also introduces them to our musical treasures!"

Finally, a walk further south takes strollers to the newly re-opening of The New Europa Café, recently revived by the Bezaitis Family, original owners of the Europa. "I've had the extreme pleasure of helping them set up their art display," says Smith with a smile. "Not only is the Europa featuring some wonderful local artists, but we've been blessed to work with the Charles Surendorf Foundation to present four beautiful prints by Surendorf." Charles Surendorf, 1906-1979, was a nationally recognized printmaker who traveled the world and was one of the Rosevelt-Era WPA artists. Surendorf's youngest daughter, Cindy, established the Charles Surendorf Foundation to promote arts education opportunities for high school students that teach printmaking, using Charles' works as a springboard of inspiration.

"This marks our 29th consecutive ART NIGHT," states Williams. "And how we're about to release our new Judy Grossman poster. It's a great ride, and we hope that everyone continues to come out to support this volunteer effort." The new Grossman poster features a photograph by Wildlands Photo's Josh Emmons. "This new spot plans to become our own downtown Blues Club," Smith observes. "What a great way to welcome visitors and let locals in our our musical treasures!"

Nearby the Aloft Art Gallery, 167 S. Washington Street, invites visitors to enjoy an art show entitled "Things I Love--It's A Wonderful World." This month the member-gallery highlights the award-winning photographic works of Robert Wright, Jim Sells & Tara-Lyn Schendel. Longtime musician Rich Rinaldi will present his popular tunes. Nearby Mountain Home Gifts, 140 S. Washington Street, welcomes author Rick Cornish, sharing his new book Why I Never Lie & 19 Other Almost True Stories. Washington Street, welcomes one of Tuolumne County's music treasures, singer/songwriter and poet Steve LaVine, Along with LaVine, Indie musician Kelly Flynn will share her own original tunes. Legends also is home to Sonora's only spot to see evidence of the notorious snake of downtown tunnels. "The old timers tell how these tunnels connected all of the downtown shops at one time."

At The Greater Good Art Gallery, 1 E. Linoberg Street, strollers can take in the art exhibition "Death Ray Dystopia." Currently offering a blend of iconic horror images and sordid twists on Pop Culture, Sonora's new gallery features works by young emerging artists. "This Saturday night is your last chance to see our ghouls, Sci-Fi horror and other creepy things," quips Zac Calbert, one of the gallery's anchor artists. Just one block east revelers can take a peak at Sonora's other new music club.

This Saturday night four Punk Music bands share their raucous sounds when Mutiny, A Better Enemy, Zombie Death Stench and The Warpath Assassins play. "Where else can you catch a Punk Show with this much music?" 2nd Saturday ART NIGHT volunteer Lisette Sweetland poses. "A lot of younger folks are thrilled to discover that Sonora is really paying attention to our interests and aesthetic."

Back on Washington Street, Backspace Boutique & Gallery, located at 67 South, features paintings and jewelry designs by several local artists, including Corey West, Heather Murdoch, Linda Henderson, Susan Sugarman, Dorene Eggleston, Magnolia Lane and Backspace's own Lauren Hurley.

Nearby at 61 S. Washington Street, Sonora's longest running consignment shop, TradeWinds, hosts a Thank You party to celebrate their recent award: The U.D.'s Readers' Choice Award for Best Consignment Store. "We're really proud to receive this awrd for the 2nd year in a row," says owner Hope Slifert, "So, we want to thank all of our great friends and customers for this honor."

Across the street Joan's Boutique, located at 52 S. Washington Street, rocks with the great rhythms of The Lava Cats, one of Tuolumne County's popular dance bands. "This group is such fun," owner Joan Richardson shares. "We want everyone to pop in and have a great time dancing in our aisles."

Next door The Ventana Art Gallery & Annex, 48 S. Washington St., recognizes two outstanding regional artists, Stacy and Sherman Hay. Long recognized as one of Tuolumne County's "Art Power Couples," these two incredibly talented artists share Sherman's new sculptures and photos of his Sonora Art Garden Installation, along with new paintings by Stacy, including dynamic new self-portraits and mixed media pieces. It's the 3rd annual ITSA Film Festival!

November is here and it's time to be thankful for all the great things happening in Sonora and all Tuolumne / Calaveras county areas! Could not be a better start to our season than the 3rd Annual ITSA Film Festival in Downtown Sonora! Yes, Tuolumne's own 3rd Annual ITSA Film Festival starts on November 2, 2012 and runs for three days ending on November 4th. There are six workshops, over 50 films, a gala and speakers from all over. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.

Sonora Night Out is all decked out in "Pink" this month and by clicking on our main "Big or Small, Save Them All" web screen you can learn more about Breast Cancer and how you can help. So please share SNO and help spread the word about Breast Cancer Awareness. They've have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go!

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce present THE 30TH ANNUAL FIDDLE & BANGO* CONTEST AND CHILI COOK-OFF on Saturday October 6, 2012. An all day music competition held at the gazebo in Columbia State Historic Park. In addition to a full day of music, spectators can participate in Columbia's chili cook-off. Local Columbia eateries will compete against each other for bragging rights to the Best chili in Columbia. Chili connoisseurs can take part in the tasting and voting by purchasing a $6 tasting pass that includes a souvenir tin cup, spoon, a map to the chili hot spots, and a tear-off ballot for voting. On August 4th, Railtown 1897 presents the first SINGIN' RAILS, Railroad Music Festival! Music starts at 5PM, featuring legendary folk singer Mary McCaslin. This month, Sonora will be celebrating one of their most hallowed night out festivals, Magic of the Night, Friday, August 10th! Don't miss this chance to meet up with all your friends and dance the night away. This event is Free to the public and live music is everywhere!

The Mother Lode Antique Car Club and the Model "A" Car Club will also be at Court House Square showing off their vintage classics. And look for all the HOT merchants specials for this night only!

Grand concerts at Ironstone Amphitheatre set a high bar for mega-name talent and this month the phenomenal John Fogerty makes an appearance in the Motherlode winery, Saturday, August 3rd. Heart - August 11th and and Tony Bennett - August 31 follow up with concerts through the month!

The BluesBox Bayou Band will begin their swing through the Motherlode with their kick off Concert in the Pines, Saturday August 4th, with followup shows in Sonora's Coffill Park, Friday Aug 10th, and the Columbia Street Dance on August 18th. This will be the biggest street dance ever! Then kick back on the Courthouse lawn August 24th for their live Courthouse Square concert for Sonora. Live community concerts continue throughout Tuolumne with Wednesdays in Tuolumne City, Friday nights at the Sonora Courthouse Park and Saturday Concert in the Pines, Twain Harte community.

Summer's Full Swing!

Wow, the year is half over and summer time is in full swing! It's a great time to be in the hills enjoying the scenic beauty, mountain air, history and all the musical entertainment that goes with it! Let's get started...

July's centerpiece is the Motherlode County Fair with all the great events you expect from the "Hottest Little Fair in California". Two hundred trees add scenic value to this garden setting, making the fairgrounds an event destination to an estimated 274,000 visitors throughout the year. The Mother Lode Fair provides our community event programming and a facility that enhances the quality of life in Tuolumne County.
- Friday July 13th features live music by Amanda Ply, Chains Required, and the Good Luck Thrift Store
- Saturday night July 14th, features, Open Mic Night, Amanda Ply, Dye Musica, Uplands Drive Band, and Patrice Pike.
- Sunday July 15th wraps up with Rockin' Rythym Wranglers, Patt James & The Night Crawlers, Mighty Coyote and Lost Weekend. As always the weekend arena shows will be humming with the 4X4 Truck Pulls and Destruction Derbys!

Friends of downtown welcome everyone to Sonora's 2nd Saturday ART NIGHT on July 14th from 5pm to 8pm. Live Music in the air! This is the time when all the fine cities of Tuolumne come alive with concerts presenting a variety of music with a distinct flavor of the Sierra mountain lifestyle. Twain Harte leads the way with there legendary Concerts in the Pines! This regular Saturday event: Val Starr & the Blues Rocket - July 7th, Jana & Friends- July 14th, Micheal Goodell's Magnificent Dance Band - July 21.

Saturday & Sunday, July 21-22, DON'T MISS the Twain Harte Summer Arts & Wine Festival with over 100 crafts and artists and wine tastings. Aloft Art Gallery, Sat July 14th, 5PM. Sherie Drake's oil paintings of men and women serving our country, are featured in the gallery window. Sherie was inspired to paint this series by photos given to her by her step-grandson, Kyle Gribi. Kyle served two tours in Iraq and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for bravery and meritorious service. Painting these became a personal statement for Sherie, to honor those willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedom. The Best Happy Hours we've found are in Jamestown! WHY: A monthly celebration of our community's strong arts & culture presence & creative spirit!

On June 9th, downtown Sonora marks its 22nd consecutive Sonora 2nd Saturday ART NIGHT. From 5pm until 8pm live music, art demonstrations and gallery receptions welcome visitors and locals for a summer's night stroll. "We're approaching our second anniversary," says event volunteer John Williams. "Each month more people come downtown and more spots add to the atmosphere."

This month a host of Sierra Foothill artists and musicians will celebrate our region's creative life. One special surprise is in the works. "We just heard from Lava Cats, who will play that night!" explains volunteer B.Z. Smith. "This band is a lot of fun, a great dance band." Details on the location of the Lava Cats' performance will be available Saturday night. Smith adds, "It's a great excuse to get out and see all of our 2nd Saturday locations. One of them will really be rocking the house with the Lava Cats!"

More than 15 downtown spots will join in the ART NIGHT activities. Central Sierra Arts Council, 193 S. Washington St., hosts a critical exhibition, inspired by the acclaimed ceramic artist Harry Nakamoto, who marks his 80th birthday next month. "The Columbia Anagama Story" features nine local potters, all students of Nakamoto, and will introduce viewers to Japan's ancient tradition of wood-fired pottery. Nearby at 177 S. Washington St., Emberz Wood-Fired Foodz presents works by award-winning photographer Geoff Wynne from his "Playing with Marbles" series. Then at the Aloft Art Gallery, 167 S. Washington St., artist Ruth Morrow gives a painting demonstration during an art reception that features her work. Then across the street at 140 S. Washington St., Sonora Joe's, invites strollers to enjoy Bluegrass tunes with The Devil Mountain Boys.

The popular historic spot Legends Old Fashioned Soda Fountain, 131 S. Washington St., present music by The Brothers Strong. Shane and Stephen Strong play acoustic folk with powerful vocal harmonies. While next door, Benjamin Fig Imports displays beaded mask work by Gwen Popovac.

Joans' Boutique, 52 S. Washington St., welcomes artist Pam West, with her one-of-a-kind, semi-precious stones and sterling jewelry. Next door the Ventana Art Gallery, located in the historic Bradford Building at 48 S. Washington St., hosts a special evening to honor painters Twyla Olsen and Robin Bowles. Joining them will be Sonora's newest jazz combo, "JuJu Jazz," featuring the talents of 12 year-old Dominic Restivo and the Mangilis. Young Restivo musical fire has been nurtured by his father, Rick Restivo, a long-time Tuolumne County music educator, and by recent "gigs" with Columbia College's Jazz Band. Upstairs in the Bradford Studio B invites visitors to see downtown Sonora's only working studio and gallery space, highlighting the works of 6 local artists: Allison Blansit, Irene Deaver, Sherie Drake, Adam Duffy, Mike Kiriluk and Twyla Olsen. Art lovers can also enjoy murals by Judy Grossman in The Candy Vault at the corner of Bradford Ave. and Washington St.

Downtown Shoes, located at 4 S. Washington St., kicks off the night with music by popular flutist June Diggle and additioanl works by artist Geoff Wynne, sharing his "foot-tography," clever images of people's feet. In addition, nature photographer Brenda Grosky displays her works. Across the street at 11 S. Washington St, It's Yo Good Yogurt offers a delightful exhibition of artwork by local students, as well as a Judy Grossman mural. Talulah's Restaurant, 13 S. Washington, presents paintings by one of Sonora's premier abstract artist, Robert Carabas.

We all loved the AMGEN Tour but now we're just looking forward to more good music, food, fun and art! More major events are taking place than ever in June, we 'll try to cover a few! - Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 6:00pm - Railtown 1897 is setting the stage for their big night in lights. Spotlight on Railtown is presented by five local area Rotary Clubs; tickets are $50 per person. All proceeds from this special fundraising event will directly benefit the Park and its continued operation. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m., with local wines and delicious appetizers served in and around the Park’s signature facility, the Historic Jamestown Roundhouse and Shops. As guests tour the facility, they will enjoy live music; turntable demonstrations; historic railcar rides; and “Movie Star” locomotive Sierra No. 3 in operation. March 9th, 10th and 11, three days of great fun and fantasy! This is a hallmark Sonora event, the oldest and largest of its kind on the West Coast.
